An interview with SKY NEWS ARABIA on the European Union’s launch of Operation Aspides, aimed at safeguarding maritime traffic.

He noted that nearly 12 percent of world trade and 40 percent of Asian-European trade pass through the Red Sea routes, indicating that the ongoing unrest poses a threat to European strategic interests.
Farnel stressed that in order to achieve the Aspids mission’s goal of deterring Houthi attacks, “this is a multifaceted issue that goes beyond military deterrence and requires a holistic approach that includes diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of the current conflict in the Middle East.”
He added: “These measures must be part of a broader strategy that includes diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution initiatives to ensure long-term stability in the region, and a transition from a defensive to an offensive position must also take place.”
